Senior Solutions Architect – Digital Experience & AI at EMBL

About the role

Responsibilities:
- Lead solution architecture for digital experience initiatives: web apps, APIs, content platforms and AI-enabled services.
- Shape AI-driven services using LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, semantic search, agentic patterns and workflow orchestration where they add value.
- Translate user journeys and UX principles into sustainable, accessible and privacy-aware technical architectures.
- Lead discovery, prototyping and architectural development; remain hands-on during technical exploration and proof-of-concepts.
- Provide technical direction, mentor development teams and promote best engineering practices across projects.
- Collaborate with product, UX and stakeholders to define roadmaps and align technical choices with user needs and policy constraints.

Requirements:
- Extensive experience in solution architecture or senior software engineering leadership for digital services.
- Practical experience designing AI-enabled applications (LLMs, RAG, tool-calling/agents, semantic search) and turning research into production services.
- Strong software engineering skills, API and cloud architecture knowledge (Kubernetes, containerisation, CI/CD) and data integration experience.
- Demonstrable experience with prototyping, observability, security and privacy-by-design for user-facing systems.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; experience mentoring teams and shaping cross-disciplinary work.
- Commitment to inclusive design and accessibility (WCAG) and familiarity with knowledge graph/vector DB approaches is desirable.
