Data Scientist - AI Search & Ranking at trivago

Responsibilities:
- Own end-to-end components of search, retrieval and ranking pipelines from problem framing to production and business impact.
- Build query understanding systems (intent classification, NER, slot filling) across 35+ languages to handle ambiguous user input.
- Design retrieval and ranking layers: candidate generation, neural reranking, vector search, and latency/recall trade-offs.
- Address data bias in behavioral signals, personalise results using session and long-term signals, and balance commercial value with relevance.
- Run experiments (A/B tests), monitor live metrics and iterate to close the gap between offline and online performance.
- Collaborate with engineers, product and analytics to deploy and maintain models at scale under latency constraints.

Requirements:
- 5+ years building and shipping search or recommendation systems in production.
- Strong Python and SQL skills; experience with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch) and HuggingFace/transformers.
- Solid knowledge of IR techniques, learning-to-rank, vector search and multilingual NLP.
- Experience with experimentation (A/B testing), production deployment and measuring business KPIs.
- Familiarity with GCP/Vertex AI, Airflow and system design for low-latency, large-scale services.
