Responsibilities:
- Architect scalable, maintainable backend systems powering billing engines, energy-market communication, and a full accounting ledger.
- Design and implement a modular billing engine and reliable end-to-end billing flows.
- Build integrations and protocols for low-level energy-market communication.
- Implement database schemas, queries, and migrations with PostgreSQL and ORM (Drizzle or similar).
- Develop Next.js backend services (API routes / server components) and TypeScript/Node.js services using robust async patterns.
- Ensure observability, reliability, and performance of distributed systems; add monitoring and alerting where needed.
- Ship features end-to-end: design, implement, test, deploy, and operate in production.
- Contribute to code reviews, technical decisions, and raise engineering standards as an early team member.
Requirements:
- 3+ years building backend infrastructure in production environments.
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js, including asynchronous programming patterns.
- Practical experience with PostgreSQL and an ORM (Drizzle or equivalent).
- Experience developing Next.js backend services (API routes or server components).
- Familiarity with distributed systems design, scalability, and reliability trade-offs.
- Experience integrating payment systems (Stripe) or working on billing flows is a plus.
- Demonstrable technical excellence via standout projects, research, startup or similar achievements.
- Recent hands-on individual-contributor experience shipping production code.
- Comfortable in an early-stage startup environment and willing to work on-site in Berlin full-time.
- Fluency in German at C1 level or above.
