Principal Software Engineer, Data Platform at Toast

Responsibilities:
- Drive technical strategy and hands-on execution for the data platform: Spark, Iceberg and streaming systems at scale.
- Diagnose performance issues, design resilient architectures and lead implementation of high-throughput pipelines.
- Design and evolve developer-facing APIs and abstractions to enable self-service by product teams.
- Align stakeholders across engineering, product and leadership; influence adjacent teams and adoption.
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers; raise engineering standards and tooling across the organisation.
- Use and promote AI tooling to accelerate development and improve platform productivity.
Requirements:
- 8+ years software engineering experience, with significant work on data platforms or distributed systems.
- Deep, demonstrable expertise with Apache Spark and Apache Iceberg and production experience tuning them under load.
- Strong background in streaming infrastructure (Kafka, Pulsar, etc.) and cloud-native platforms on AWS.
- Experience designing internal platforms, API surfaces and developer ergonomics for wide adoption.
- Strong systems design, performance tuning and cross-team communication skills; experience mentoring engineers.
